The best luxury Bahamas resort: The Ocean Club, a Four Seasons Resort — travel guide and photo essay:
There aren’t many places I’ll travel to more than once – after all, the world offers endless destinations and experiences. The rule is usually “try somewhere new.” This year I returned to the Bahamas, this time around for a romantic trip with my partner. It’s the perfect vacation to do with friends. It’s just as perfect as a vacation as a couple.
In short, The Bahamas is just short of paradise perfection. It’s an exception to the rule. More importantly, it’s above and beyond an exceptional destination and experience worth visiting over and over.

Why the Bahamas
When it comes to luxury Caribbean destinations, the Bahamas has a reputation for bringing dreams to life.
Topography: From the moment you arrive, you’re greeted by the turquoise waters, pristine beaches, and unique blend of elegance and vibrant Bahamian culture.
Ambiance: The waters are warm and the locals are even warmer! The Bahamas manage a laid-back island vibe with a dash of glamor.
Convenience: A quick escape, the Bahamas is just a short 30-minute hop from Miami or 3 hours from New York, making it an easy-to-reach slice of paradise from countless U.S. cities.
As someone who has previously visited the Bimini and Junkanoo Festival, I made the trip back to the Bahamas for a weekend at Paradise Island in Nassau.
Paradise Island: A Slice of Bahamian Heaven
Paradise Island, connected to Nassau by two bridges, is home to some of the Bahamas’ most stunning beaches, high-end shopping, and vibrant nightlife. But amid the island’s excitement, The Ocean Club offers a sanctuary of refined elegance and Caribbean luxury. This resort is more than just a place to stay—it’s a destination in itself, blending Bahamian culture with European charm.
While there are many options for travelers, few places capture the spirit of the Bahamas like The Ocean Club, A Four Seasons Resort on Paradise Island. This legendary resort has been a haven for the world’s elite since the 1960s and is now a serene oasis of luxury and charm under the Four Seasons brand.
The History of The Ocean Club: A Legacy of Luxury
The Ocean Club’s rich history dates back to the 1960s, when Huntington Hartford II, heir to the A&P grocery fortune, transformed what was then an underdeveloped island into a luxurious hideaway. Inspired by the beauty of the Bahamas and the elegance of Versailles, he crafted gardens that mimic the grandiosity of French estates, bringing sophistication to this luxury Bahamas resort… more so to this tropical retreat.
Throughout the decades, The Ocean Club has attracted the world’s elite, from Hollywood icons to royalty. In 2017, Four Seasons took over management, adding its renowned hospitality to this iconic property while maintaining its unique charm. Today, the resort still exudes that Old World elegance but with all the modern touches expected of a luxury stay, making it a favorite for travelers seeking an escape into paradise.
The Resort Experience: Unmatched Luxury at The Ocean Club
At The Ocean Club, every detail, from the lush gardens to the oceanfront villas, is designed to deliver a memorable stay. Here’s a look at what you can expect:
1. Oceanfront Accommodations: Villas, Suites, and Cottages
Private Villas: With sweeping ocean views, the private villas at The Ocean Club are an epitome of luxury. These expansive villas come with full kitchens, private pools, and personal butler service, perfect for families or those seeking absolute privacy.
Suites and Cottages: Inspired by colonial Bahamian architecture, the suites and cottages combine classic decor with breathtaking views. Each suite features plush interiors, marble bathrooms, and outdoor patios or balconies overlooking the gardens or ocean.
2. The Ocean Club Spa: Indulgence with Bahamian Essence
The spa at The Ocean Club is a tranquil retreat surrounded by tropical greenery, with an extensive menu of treatments that draw from ancient Balinese traditions and Bahamian ingredients.
Signature treatments, like the Coconut Body Polish or Ocean Detox Wrap, incorporate locally sourced elements to rejuvenate the skin and spirit. The open-air treatment villas are perfect for couples and those seeking ultimate relaxation.
3. Dining at The Ocean Club: A Culinary Journey
The resort’s dining experiences are as luxurious as the accommodations, with a variety of world-class restaurants that highlight local ingredients and international flavors:
Dune by Jean-Georges: Overlooking the ocean, this iconic restaurant offers French-Asian cuisine with Bahamian twists. Chef Jean-Georges brings flavors like spicy tuna rolls, Bahamian conch salad, and truffle pizza to a refined island setting. Try their signature cocktails on the terrace as the sun sets for an unforgettable experience.
Ocean by Four Seasons: A poolside favorite offering fresh seafood, grilled specialties, and an array of cocktails. Their lobster rolls and ceviche are must-tries.
Versailles Terrace: Located in the Versailles Gardens, this casual dining spot is perfect for a midday snack or refreshing drink while exploring the stunning grounds.
4. The Versailles Gardens and Cloisters: A Slice of European Grandeur
Perhaps the most famous feature of The Ocean Club is its Versailles-inspired gardens and 12th-century Augustinian cloisters, originally imported from France. These beautifully manicured grounds are lined with statues, tropical flora, and sweeping pathways, making it feel like a European estate in the Bahamas.
Whether you’re taking a morning stroll, enjoying a sunset, or even planning a destination wedding, these gardens offer a sense of serenity and elegance that’s hard to match.
5. Exclusive Pool and Beach Experiences at this Luxury Bahamas Resort
The Ocean Club’s beachfront is a private stretch of white sand along the cerulean waters of Paradise Island. Lounge in cabanas with dedicated beachside service, or take a dip in the gentle waves.
The adults-only tranquility pool offers a secluded spot for relaxation, while the family-friendly lagoon pool is perfect for a lively day in the sun.
6. Golf with an Ocean View
Golf enthusiasts will love the Tom Weiskopf-designed 18-hole Ocean Club Golf Course. It offers challenging fairways and stunning ocean views, making it one of the most scenic courses in the Caribbean. The course is a favorite among both casual players and seasoned golfers.
Things to Do Beyond the Resort: Day Trip to Exuma
While the Ocean Club offers everything you need for a luxury Bahamas resort — it’s possible to explore other parts of the Bahamas and comfortably return for a stay at the hotel. We opt’d for a quick trip to Exuma, a different island chain. Exuma is an easy half day trip or day trip.
On this excursion we had quite the instagram-able and (more importantly) memorable adventure.
- Swimming with Pigs
- Swimming with Sharks
- Visiting Iguana Island
The half day-trip approach allowed us to spend less time packing/unpacking, checking in/out, and booking travel – and more time relaxing and romancing in the resort.
Insider Tips for an Unforgettable Stay at The Ocean Club
To make the most of your visit, here are some insider tips:
- Book in Advance: The Ocean Club is highly sought after, especially during peak season (December to April). Reserve your villa, spa treatments, and dining experiences well in advance.
- Best Times to Visit: For fewer crowds and ideal weather, consider visiting between March and May. The offseason (June to November) offers lower rates, though keep in mind that this period overlaps with hurricane season. We didn’t mind the weather changes, and if it rained a bit, we used the time to be more present with each other.
- Explore the Gardens at Sunrise or Sunset: The Versailles Gardens are especially enchanting early in the morning or at dusk. This is also when you’ll get the best lighting for photos!
- Spa Reservations: Try booking a spa villa for a couple’s treatment or a solo retreat. The open-air villas let you feel the tropical breezes during your treatment, which adds to the calming atmosphere.
- Friday Cocktail Mixer: Join fellow guests for a Friday evening mixer, with complimentary drinks to kick off the weekend!
- Hit the Water with Paddle Boarding: Beach paddle boards are available for you to enjoy as part of your stay. Just check with the concierge for operating hours and get ready to paddle out!
- Enjoy the Rhythm: Catch live music on select nights, adding an extra beat to your island evenings.
